He commenced judging at national shows in 1977 and now judges in UK, Europe, US, South Africa and New Zealand. James founded Coldstream Hills in 1985 and has written or co-authored over 50 books on wine since 1979 including Oxford Companion to Wine, Arousse Encyclopaedia of Wine, Wine Atlas of California and the Wine Atlas of Australia.
